But, first things first… What is Dalgona Coffee?

A perfectly bittersweet treat featuring a silky whipped foam, Dalgona coffee was inspired by a famous Korean street candy, but the drink itself is an exciting blend of sugary and sharp––the ideal beverage to give you a boost on those long, quarantined afternoons.

Fun fact: Though Dalgona has its own special taste, the drink shares some traits with a popular Greek beverage called the “frappé.” Sipping a Dalgona means you’ll get a flavor that’s uniquely Asian with a delightful dash of European!

When we heard about an up-and-coming iced coffee drink born in the kitchens of South Korea during lockdown, we knew we just had to give it its own Magic Cup spin and share the deliciously trendy drink with our customers.

If you’re interested in trying out a classic Dalgona, we suggest our original Dalgona Foam Latte and Chai Dalgona Foam drinks. These beverages feature our usual premium espresso and chai, respectively, with a healthy dollop of Dalgona foam on top. Our whipped, coffee-infused Dalgona foam is thick (but not too thick) and creamy, and it adds an extra bit and flavor to two of our most popular menu items (so, think special orders like “double-shot latte” or “dirty chai”). Sugar and caffeine levels can be adjusted according to your taste, and we also offer non-dairy options for all Dalgona beverages.

We’re going to take a look at two of our most popular Asian-inspired flavors so that next time you visit one of our locations, you can order something a little out of your comfort zone (but do it with complete confidence!).

Magic Matcha

Even if you’ve never heard of matcha before, you’ve probably already seen it in the hands of trendy tea drinkers who like their beverages with a smooth taste, an extra burst of caffeine, and a special side of antioxidants. Those fabulously frothy lattes that are green instead of coffee-colored? Those are made with matcha!

Matcha is a Japanese green tea that’s prepared slightly differently than usual. Instead of steeping tea leaves in water and then discarding the tea, matcha drinkers consume the entire leaf by grounding the tea into a fine powder and blending it with water or milk. This means you get all the health benefits of green tea––which has been linked to weight loss and disease prevention––but with some added caffeine and a somewhat bolder flavor. We think matcha provides a wonderful base for our famous Matcha Frappe, but we also love it iced with some boba or chia seed topping in the Matcha Milk Tea with Chia Seeds, too. Matcha Milk Tea or Frappe is made with a whole milk base, which can be substituted for non-dairy milk such as soy milk, coconut milk, or almond milk.

Tempting Taro

Taro root is such a versatile food; you may have actually eaten it a few times without realizing it. Commonly featured in root veggie chip mixes as well as a wide range of international dishes from fries to pudding to tempura, taro’s potato-like texture, and mild-yet-sweet taste make it an excellent addition to any cuisine. Often ground into powder-like matcha (only taro is usually purple, not green), the root pairs nicely with milk and creates a refreshing treat when poured over ice. Plus, taro’s high fiber content means it can be a healthy alternative to snacks made with simpler, less nutritious carbohydrates. Our Taro Milk Tea with Lychee Jelly is made of a non-dairy base to make it a truly healthy and fun drink for boba lovers of all ages.

As an Asian American small business owner in the restaurant industry, I am inspired by my childhood memories to create drinks and items that are similar to the ones I grew up with. I remain tied to my Vietnamese heritage through my family and continue to learn more about Vietnam and other Asian Pacific cultures through my travels to Asia. In recent years, I have traveled to Vietnam, Thailand, Taiwan, and Japan.

Through these trips to Asia, I have learned more about the food and beverage world to introduce and incorporate into our menu. I appreciate immersing myself in the culture of these international countries to understand the flavor profiles of people across the world from us. My trip to Taiwan was the most eye-opening experience for our business since bubble tea originated in Taiwan and is vastly present there. I used my travel experience to the bubble tea capital of the world to gain a deeper knowledge of the tea and coffee industry.

To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage month, I’d like to share with you some of the popular, unique drinks on our menu that are influenced by tastes and flavors present in Asia and the Pacific Islands. 

1. Cafe Sua Da

Cafe Sua Da, or Vietnamese Coffee, is an everyday drink present in Southeast Asia. In Asian countries, this beverage is comparable to a morning “cup of Joe.” Families will enjoy a cup of Cafe Sua Da together as part of their daily morning routine before heading to work or at family gatherings. At Magic Cup, we make this drink with a rich blend of medium roast house coffee, using our slow drip brewing method for a strong flavor, and sweeten it with condensed milk. 

2. Nuoc Mat

Nuoc Mat, or Winter Melon Artichoke Iced Tea, is popular in Vietnam for its refreshing taste and health benefits. This tea can help lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels and is thought to be a great drink to detoxify your system. The older generation of Asian Americans enjoy this drink as a cool refresher and it is now catching on with the younger generation. 

3. Thai Tea

Thai Tea is a renowned beverage in the bubble tea community. As such, we made sure to include our own version of it on the menu. To make our unique Thai Tea, we steep the tea for 12 hours to extract all of its flavors and make a smooth, well-balanced, and creamy final product. I recommend trying our take on this classic drink at your next visit! 

4. Winter Melon Lime Iced Tea

Our Winter Melon Lime Iced Tea is included on the menu as a result of my trip to Taiwan. Winter Melon is a popular flavor in Taiwan for its light and refreshing taste. We like to include drinks on our menu that are popular and recognizable to our customers -- Winter Melon is a flavor that many customers requested when visiting our store. As such, we introduced a Winter Melon Lime Iced Tea as a fresh, revitalizing drink perfect for a hot summer day.

1. Communication With Customers

Before introducing any new changes, we made sure to continually update the community we’ve built over the past five years: This includes a list of over 24,000 subscribers on our rewards program, whom we can directly text and over 18,000 followers across social media channels.

As soon as the restaurant dine-in ban was mandated, we were able to alert our communities that we would remain open for takeout and delivery. We have been continually updating them since. Updates include safety practices, new product introductions, and community work to make customers feel more connected to what we are doing to serve them at this time.

We have also begun reaching out to new audiences with local digital ads and are seeing an upward trend in new customer sign-ups to our rewards program week by week since the beginning of the dine-in ban.

2. Gallon and Half Gallon Sizes

For the foreseeable future, customers will be minimizing the number of times they are leaving home or exposing themselves to external factors. That’s why we introduced gallon and half-gallon sizes of milk teas and fusion teas. With our beverage gallons, an entire household can treat themselves to milk and fusion teas for half a week from just one visit.

We have seen tremendous success with the gallons, having sold 291 gallons in just one month.

3. Online Ordering and Delivery

Our robust POS system allows for online ordering at nominal flat rates, allowing customers to order through a link on our website. Customers have responded well to the introduction of this feature, as it minimizes the amount of time they need to spend inside the store, increasing peace of mind.

Additionally, all Magic Cup stores are listed on UberEats for accessibility to new and return customers.

4. Passing it On

We are grateful that our customers are still choosing to drink Magic Cup during these challenging times, and our business model has proven to be resilient. To pass on our appreciation, Magic Cup has donated over 50 gallons of milk tea and fusion tea to local healthcare professionals in Houston and Dallas. It has been rewarding for our team to share love and magic, and when customers see that they have a part in supporting essential workers during this time, our community grows stronger.

How It Works

Our goal through catering is to help you create a unique experience with family, friends, and loved ones. Depending on the size of your party, you can choose between bubble tea by the gallon or individual bottles.

To get started, we ask customers to place their catering request 14 days in advance so our baristas can prepare to fulfill the order on the day of the event.

We want to make sure that catering on your special day is made just for you. As such, we offer several beverages on our catering menu for you to choose from. For large orders or events, we offer on-site services where our baristas make and serve drinks at your party. We are happy to assist at your event to create a fun environment with a bubble tea station. To request baristas at your event, we require a minimum purchase order of $500 in products. What is Lunar New Year

If you are unfamiliar with Lunar New Year, you may ask, “Why is the Lunar New Year celebrated outside of the new year typically observed on January 1?” Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, follows the lunar calendar, which means the start of the year falls on a new moon. Because the new year is dependent on a new moon, the date for Lunar New Year differs from year to year in accordance with moon cycles.

Many Asian cultures follow the lunar calendar, which is why Lunar New Year is a widely celebrated national holiday in many countries in east and southeast Asia. This year, Lunar New Year begins on January 25 and ends with the Lantern Festival on February 8. Each year also corresponds with one of twelve Chinese zodiac animals, with 2020 being the year of the rat.
